GCI principals conducted a forensic study of failing MSE wall abutments for a railroad crossing bridge. This work for the owner included review of construction records, interviews, field observations and measurements, a geotechnical field exploration, and stability analyses to assess potential failure mechanisms. GCI principals later designed several repair alternatives, including soil nails and transverse anchors. The owner eventually selected a complete rebuilding of the abutments. GCI worked on-site during the reconstruction, gathering additional data pertaining to the potential liability of several parties and helping assure that the repair was correctly implemented.
